Three Dimensional Pendulum

Harnessing the rhythmic motion of a pendulum, I artfully laid down strings over strategically designed combs. This structure, when immersed into a specialized liquid, blossoms into a stunning catenary arch.

Design Process

This process was inspired by the catenary structures of ribbons at festivals as well as the intricate details formed by dipping bundles of string into liquids.

The process began by laser cutting the comb shapes and pieces to glue them together. Using a pendulum string is release over the combs until there is plenty of string. After this a thin layer of foam is glued to the top of the combs and the structure is flipped over. It is then dipped into a mixture of glue and water, and hung overnight to dry.

Several material studies were done to determine number of strings as well as type of comb.

This final project had three iterations using different comb designs
